Educational Technology: A Synthesis

This is a collage of sorts of the reading material distributed for us to read and synthesize.  Instructions were also well-stated.

My synthesis:

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY: A SYNTHESIS

Different authors define the phrase “educational technology” differently, but it can be noted that the meanings and thoughts are the same --- it is a systematic way of designing, implementing and evaluating the total process of teaching and learning in terms of specific objectives, based on research in human and non human resources to bring about more effective instruction.

For educational technology to be an effective tool in the learning process it must address the need for everyone to understand and apply the fundamental skills and processes performed in everyday living and appreciate the value of technological change and contribute to the improvement of quality of life. Since the important characteristics manifested by those who have been exposed to the use of educational technology are that (1) it allows an individual to acquire technical knowledge and related information; (2) it forms desirable attitudes and values; (3) it develops systematic, efficient and safe work habits, it would; therefore, lead to a generation of individuals who are not only equipped with technical skills and knowledge but also appropriate attitude and work ethics.

History brought about a process of trial and error, imitation, individual creativity and persuasion leading to what is now known as educational technology. In the past, specifically during the glorious reign of Greece as Queen of the Mediterranean, educational technology was simply referred to as the process of applying knowledge systematically to the practical art of instruction.  This belief of the process of transmitting knowledge and information from teacher to learner and vice versa evolved to make way for visual instruction, audio-visual machines and photography in the 19th century. At present, it has been recognized that the teaching-learning process takes in a more positive result --- more interactive and enjoyable both for the teacher and the learner --- with the use of modern gadgetry like DVD’s, television sets, computers, LCD projectors, cellular phones (they are already utilized in some countries to assign group reports and/or assignments),  and the like.

Like all other pedagogies and strategies that are utilized to enhance the teaching-learning process, the use of educational technology in the classroom must be well-planned if it were to serve its true purpose. First, objectives must be identified.  This is the logical approach to human activities.  Next, learning experiences must be designed such that sequences, strategies and mode of media must be well-planned.  In designing learning experiences, limitations of budget, personnel, facilities, equipment and time constraint must be considered. The next point to be considered is how the effectiveness of the learning experiences can be evaluated.  Evaluation can be through observation devises, self report instruments and/or test items.

While contemporary classroom settings call for the utilization of more advanced instructional technology, it does not always follow that it will be very effective when used alone.  It must be understood that the role of the teacher in the classroom can not be replaced; therefore, the responsibility of a successful transmission of knowledge and skills from teacher to student is still in the hands of the teacher.

New technology can support an impressive range of possibilities where teaching and learning are concerned and we all must aim to exploit it.  But no matter how technologically advanced the approach to education is, learning is still in the heart of the learner.  Computers can never get to the point of replacing the most crucial presence in the classroom: the person --- whether it be the student or the teacher himself.

Finally, since technology is a creative invention of the human mind to assist us in whatever pursuit and endeavor we may choose to embark on, we must make sure to make designs --- designing and redesigning until we are sure that we are doing well.
